Only 20% of Catholics attend Mass every week!?

Only 20% of U.S. citizens who identify themselves as Catholic attend mass every week.  11% say they attend almost every week and 10% say once or twice a month.  What is the main reason for missing mass?  Among those who only go a few times a year they say that they don’t believe missing mass is a sin 64%.  Lack of time or busy schedule is the main reason among those who attend less than weekly but at least once a month (51%).

These statistics speak volumes.   We hear about how many young people are attracted to Islam and the main reason is because of their devotion.  Catholics have become lazy about their faith and have no one to blame.  How can you believe that missing mass isn’t a sin?  That is what the Church teaches.  You don’t get to pick and choose which parts you want them to be right on and the rest you can toss out.  That is why are kids are steeped in debauchery and confusion.  They get no clear consistent message at home.  If all of the lazy Catholics out there actually lived and practiced their faith then more young people would be attracted to the Church.  They don’t see people they know that claim to be Catholics living out anything of thier faith that they profess.  I have met some people who claim to be muslims that are lazy and don’t pracctice what they say they believe but by and large they are very devout.  Young people see their faith and are attracted to what they have.  They feel they must have something to be so ardous about their faith so they want to find out what it is.  They would feel the same way about Catholicism if they actually saw the majority of the people calling themselves Catholic living out their faith.  To me this is a problem all of us share together.  We need to stop worrying about trying to put out some watered down ecumenical message.  We need to stop wasting time running around dialoging with other faiths and clean up our own house.  We need to dialogue with the people out their who claim to be Catholic and drive the message home about what it means to be Catholic.  People used to live their faith.  People used to participate in the sacraments and nothing could keep them away from mass on Sunday’s short of having a heart attack on the way to the parish.  Sad.  It’s time to stop dialoging with Lutherans, Episcopalians, and others and worry about what is happening at home.  Why are we wasting so much time talking with Lutherans anyway.  Martin Luther was a man that had hallucinations in which the devil was throwing poop at him and stated that he wanted to shove the devil up his butt where he belonged.  No kidding!!  Look it up!  Start living your faith and the young will start coming home.  They will want to see what you have because your life will speak about it.  How we live our lives is the greatest sermon we could ever preach.
